Wednesday

Due to Yepa’s stomach upset we didn’t do any new training today – instead we went for a walk in the park, and sat for a while and talked, with Yepa enjoying lying down in the grass and watching what was happening around her. We let her sniff a round and have a run – it was a day off for Yepa, to give her time to recover and relax. We didn’t take any treats and Yepa walked beautifully next to the wheelchair. For a brief time in the park we also let her walk off leash, and she stayed alongside just the same. She was great with passing dogs, ignored them completely.

Thursday

Today we focused again on indoor skills –
1) We tried again with paw targeting, this time with a blue plastic disc, and then again with her mat. She is clearly reluctant to put her paws on anything except a mat, which she knows she is allowed to lie down on. So we will continue with that for a while until she understands a cue that means “touch with your paw”

2) We played with the tennis ball and 2 toys – Yepa pounced and fetched, and on one or two occasions brought the toy back and put it into my hand. She is playing more enthusiastically – for short periods of time before losing interest.

3) We practiced with the target stick – nose touches, then licks and mouth grabs. She is almost doing a double mouth grab, which is a big step forward.

4) She was also able to follow the stick around the room, and in a circle.

5) Finally we practiced with the target stick against the wall, gradually raising it higher until it was level with the light switch. Again this was progress, as Yepa has not done this before.
