MILWAUKIE, Ore. – A hazardous materials cloud from Precision Castparts on Johnson Creek Boulevard Wednesday sent four people to the hospital.

Fire crews said a hydroflouric nitric acid combo cloud leaked from the building just before 6 p.m. when a chunk of titanium in a vat of acid inside the building created a chemical reaction after an electrical failure.

Two Clackamas Co. Fire & Rescue firefighters and two employees of the company suffered respiratory irritation and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Neighbors within a 1/2-mile radius of the plant were being asked to “shelter in place,” Clackamas Fire officials said, and the warning will be in effect through at least Thursday morning. People living in the area are able to come and go from their homes, but they’re asked to avoid the outdoors if possible, as a safety precaution.
