Ну, что..

Губернатором Орегона в четвертый раз стал Джон Китцхабер (John Kitzhaber)

PORTLAND, Ore. – A measure to legalize marijuana for recreational use in Oregon has passed, according to KGW news partner The Oregonian.

Oregon becomes the third U.S. state to legalize recreational pot. With two-thirds of precincts reporting, legal pot lead the race by eight percentage points, 54 to 46.

Polls showed Measure 91 was extremely close heading into Election Day.

Opinions on the measure varied by age. The measure had support from 56 percent of voters under age 35, but only 30 percent support from voters older than 65, polls showed.

“It’s always an uphill battle to win a marijuana legalization initiative in a year like this, when young people are so much less likely to vote, which makes today’s victory all the sweeter,” said Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance. “The pace of reform is accelerating, other states are sure to follow, and even Congress is poised to wake from its slumber.”

Under the measure, Oregonians 21 and older will be able to possess and smoke marijuana starting July 1 of 2015.

Adults will be able to carry up to one ounce legally, and have up to eight ounces at home, per household. Each household will be allowed grow up to four plants at a time for personal use.

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission will regulate the sale of marijuana in a similar way it regulates alcohol.

People over the age of 21 can purchase a limited amount of marijuana from licensed retailers. It will likely take around two years before the system is up and running in the state. The Oregon Liquor Control Commission will have until January 1, 2016 to set up the system and rules for processing and selling pot. They could start accepting applications January 4.

There will be regulations on where people can consume marijuana. Driving under the influence will still prohibited.

Currently, marijuana is illegal except for medical use.

Medical marijuana laws will not be affected.

The campaign to legalize pot made a play for young voters on Facebook.

Supporters of marijuana legalization raised far more money than their opponents, including landing nearly $1.5 million from a group called Drug Policy Action.

The “no” campaign only raised a fraction of that money, with the majority coming from the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association.

Dasha Daunis is a lively 15-year-old who loves animals. She talks with her mother, Anastasia, about a recent trip to the circus, where they saw her favorite, bears.

Dasha was born with Down syndrome, and Anastasia says the doctors at the hospital told her that her baby would never thrive.

“Everyone was saying, the most reasonable decision is to abandon the child, because it’s a cross you’ll have to bear all your life,” she recalls. “This child will never even understand that you are its father and mother. And your friends and your family will turn away from you.”

Anastasia says she couldn’t bear to leave her child behind, and after more than a year, she brought Dasha home from the orphanage. She never regretted her decision.

Instead, she thinks the doctors who advised her were in need of help and better information themselves.

But this Russian habit of placing disabled children in orphanages has changed little over the years, according to a new report highlighting problems with Russia’s treatment of disabled kids.

Human Rights Watch, the U.S.-based group, says that nearly 30 percent of Russian children with disabilities live in state orphanages.

“We do believe that people are still being advised to institutionalize their children,” says Andrea Mazzarino, a researcher at Human Rights Watch, which recently released its report. “We spoke with several parents who heard that advice within the past two years in Moscow alone.”

Make no mistake, the president’s name may not have been on the ballot, but the American people clearly voted down his agenda last night. The Republicans regained control of the Senate for the first time since 2006, even capturing seats in some states that were expected to go to the Democrats. Harry Reid has said this is a clear sign that the American people want the parties to work together, but Glenn thought there was something even deeper happening in the country.

“Make no mistake, these policies are on the ballot, every single one of them,” President Obama said.

Glenn addressed the Democrats, especially Harry Reid, during the opening segment of radio Wednesday. He said, “You said that the Republicans were evil, they were racist, they were going to destroy the country. You said that they were sexist. You said that they were just going to shut everything down. You called them every name under the sun. You said that they were going to ban birth control. That they were going to basically eviscerate women and put them back in the kitchen can. That’s what you said. That was the image that this media and this president and the Democratic Party tried to paint.”

“The American people rejected those lies. The American people said, we don’t believe you on any of those things. We also don’t agree with the direction you’re taking us. Now, that doesn’t mean that there’s a blank check [...] because even the Republicans aren’t trusted by people who vote Republican. I don’t trust the Republicans. So there’s no blank check implied here. But what happened yesterday is exactly what the president said this election was about recently, before they went to the polls, the president gave a speech and he laid it out and said exactly what this was really all about.”

“His name was not on the ballot, but his policies were on the ballot. Every single one of them. And he’s absolutely right. And the American people have rejected it. We have rejected it because of Ebola. We have rejected it because of ISIS. We have rejected it because we don’t buy into the economy is doing well. We have too many friends who are working part time. We rejected it because we don’t believe our borders are secure. We have rejected it because we don’t believe that we should just do executive order after executive order after executive order. We don’t believe that the EPA should just be able to regulate things out of business. Right now the average American could be charged with three felonies a day. That is Alan Dershowitz saying that. Alan Dershowitz. There are so many laws on the books now that you could be charged with up to three felonies a day. That’s the average citizen. We’ve warned you that those times were coming. They’re here. They’re here. So make no mistake. Now is the time that we can get back together and we can actually go back to Washington and say, you listen to the American people now. You listen to the American people. Republicans, get the job done,”

..Не так давно я писал про фильм Camp X-Ray

Сегодня в новостях..

(CNN) — A Kuwaiti man tied to al Qaeda, who was in Afghanistan in the days after 9/11, is out of the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he’d been held for the last 12 years, the Pentagon said Tuesday.
The Defense Department announced the transfer of Fawzi al-Odah to the Kuwaiti government. It wasn’t immediately clear how Kuwait will handle al-Odah’s case, including if he’ll be freed totally.
Regardless, the move represents a major milestone for al-Odah, who has pressed for his release for years and whose family has long professed his innocence.
According to a 2010 U.S. appeals court document on his case, al-Odah, who was born in Kuwait City in 1977, traveled to Afghanistan in August 2001. He says he went there to do charity work and teach the Quran, the Muslim holy text, to the poor and needy; the U.S. government says he went to join the Taliban in its fight against the Northern Alliance.
