NEAR SCAPPOOSE, Ore. – Fire crews rushed to the scene of a train derailment and fire south of the city of Scappoose Wednesday afternoon after a train left the tracks at about 12:45 p.m.

Firefighters said a tanker on a train carrying 28,000 gallons of ethanol caught fire and a second tanker was directly exposed to the flames.

The fire was finally put out around 3:45 p.m. Firefighters said nobody was hurt.

Officials said a train, carrying logs, derailed and hit a second a train, carrying ethanol, parked on a side track. It appears that collision set off the fire. Investigators are trying to figure out why that happened.

Police closed Highway 30 near the crash site and initiated a voluntary evacuation for nearby homes and business due to the risk of explosions. River traffic in the nearby Columbia River was also diverted.

Because there was a risk that ethanol in the tankers might explode, fire crews pulled back to a half mile away until they determined it was safe to be in the area. The train that derailed had 20 cars on it, 12 of which were carrying flammable alcohol.
