The nightmarish images from Abu Ghraib are still seared into the American consciousness: piles of naked bodies, detainees being led on leashes and U.S. soldiers giving a thumbs-up as it all happens. But now, a decade after they were made public, the U.S. government is trying to conceal as many as 2,100 additional photographs that are said to be even more disturbing.

A federal judge ruled in August that the Obama administration had to decide by October 21 whether it would release the images showing U.S. military personnel torturing detainees in Afghanistan and Iraq or defend its case, photograph by photograph, in order to continue withholding them. The administration said Tuesday that it intended to defend keeping the images secret and would supplement the record with its reasons.

This saga began back in 2004 when the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) first sued for the images’ release. Though it was ultimately successful in the trial and appeals courts, Obama said that he feared a release would “further inflame American opinion and…put our troops in greater danger,” and blocked it from happening.

Government whistleblower Edward Snowden gave the public a few words of wisdom, and caution, during a Saturday night video interview for The New Yorker Festival. During the hour-long conversation with The New Yorker’s Jane Mayer, Snowden advised viewers to get rid of Dropbox, and to avoid using high-profile online services such as Facebook and Google, if they wanted to protect their privacy in the ever-more-informed Information Age.

During an audience Q&A, Snowden that people should “search for encrypted communication services” because they “enforce your rights.” He advised the public to be wary of online services that are “hostile to privacy,” specifically Facebook and Google and cloud storage service Dropbox, the latter of which doesn’t support encryption (although the company has said that its users privacy is a “top priority”). Snowden suggested using alternative storage services like SpiderOak, which does support encryption, although he was careful to mention that much of the technology the public needs hasn’t been invented or popularized yet.

Snowden also advised Americans to not send unencrypted texts via cell phones, and turn to secure services like Silent Circle and RedPhone. Even with increased encryption and security, Snowden insisted that no phone, even those running Apple’s latest version of iOS, is entirely safe from third-party intrusion. Major cell phone providers, including Verizon, AT&T and Apple, can be subpoenaed, and authorities can still request warrants that will grant them access to their suspect’s phones.

SAN ANTONIO Texas (Reuters) – A health worker in Texas at the hospital where the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States died last week has tested positive for the deadly virus in a preliminary test, the state’s health department said on Sunday.

U.S. authorities are stepping up efforts to stop the spread of the virus, with medical teams at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport on Saturday beginning the screening of travelers from the three West African countries hardest hit by the worst Ebola outbreak on record.

The worker at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital reported a low-grade fever Friday night and was isolated and referred for testing, the Texas Department of State Health Services said in a statement.

“We knew a second case could be a reality, and we’ve been preparing for this possibility,” said Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the health service.

The worker tested positive in a preliminary test at the state public health laboratory in Austin.

A 2008 study by Cornell University put the employment rate for working-age persons with disabilities (ages 21–64) at 39.5%. Other studies may yield different figures, depending on their definition of disability or economic conditions at the time, but they all show similar disparity.

The first step to address this disparity is to understand some of the misconceptions that act as barriers to equal employment opportunities for persons with disabilities. Common misconceptions identified by industry experts include:

This goes to the heart of the matter. In 1971, when Kissinger first went to China, the U.S. economy was roughly five times that of the People’s Republic. Forty years later, as a result of the industrial revolution unleashed by Mao’s successor Deng Xiao-ping, it is conceivable that China could overtake America within a decade. This is a feat the Soviet Union never came close to achieving. Moreover, China is now the biggest foreign holder of U.S. Treasury notes, which form an important part of its vast $3 trillion of international reserves. How China will use its newfound economic power may be the most important question of our time. Few Americans are better placed to answer that question than Kissinger, who has dealt with four generations of Chinese leaders.

Billy Graham has not lived a faultless life, but he did act carefully to protect his legacy and the significance of his reputation. In private, aware of his own human weakness, he instructed his ministry staff never to leave him alone in a room with a woman who was not his wife. In these last years, he speaks frequently of Ruth and of his yearning to go home to heaven to see her. His children have not been so cautious. Bunny, Gigi, and Ned are divorced and remarried. Ned, whose ministry builds and encourages Christianity in China, has spent time in rehab for prescription drugs, and Franklin admits to having had an appetite for alcohol as a younger man. Among Graham’s 19 grandchildren, at least three have become Christian preachers. But according to a 2008 story in The Columbus Dispatch, there has been drug addiction, teenage pregnancy, and eating disorders in that generation as well. Gigi and Ruth have made ministries out of helping families endure such struggles.

“I’m just not comfortable being thought of as coming from a wonderful family,” says Gigi. “We’re not exempt from some of the problems that everyone has. We’re empathetic to, sympathetic to, all the problems that people have today. We support one another, love one another when we’re going through some of the things we’re going through.” Franklin sees these family troubles somewhat differently. He and his siblings “don’t see each other that often. I think some of them have made bad choices in life, but I’m responsible for my life. I have to stand before God and give an accounting of my life.” He pauses, then adds, “I love my sisters and would do anything I could to help them.”

It may be time to move beyond pessimism. Ever since the financial crisis, Americans have wallowed in fear and anxiety. Understandably. Although a recovery — as defined by academic economists — started about two years ago, it hasn’t felt like one. Of the 8.7 million payroll jobs lost in the recession, only 1.8 million have returned. The recovery rivals the slowest since World War II and faces continued threats. High oil prices. Europe’s debt crisis. Unexpected inflation. Washington’s bickering over the federal debt ceiling.

All true. But it’s also true that the recovery seems increasingly self-propelled. Americans are shopping again, albeit with less fervor; exports are improving; companies are hiring. Massive government spending and the Federal Reserve’s low interest rates seem less crucial to growth. Although this is good news, the pervasive post-crisis gloom prevents us from acknowledging it.

A week earlier, he told me bluntly that Obama had led him on, and then let him down by failing to keep pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a moratorium on settlement building in the West Bank last year. “It was Obama who suggested a full settlement freeze,” Abbas explained. “I said OK, I accept. We both went up the tree. After that, he came down with a ladder and he removed the ladder and said to me, jump. Three times he did it.” Abbas also criticized the mediation efforts of Obama’s special envoy, George Mitchell, who has shuttled between Israelis and Palestinians for more than two years. “Every visit by Mitchell, we talked to him and gave him some ideas. At the end we discovered that he didn’t convey any of these ideas to the Israelis. What does it mean?”

Bush was president, his “freedom agenda” was about democratic elections and ending one-party rule in the developing world. Now the No. 1 issue has become freedom from crippling debt and restoring fiscal balance in the developed world. Who will ring out 2011 in better shape than when it began? Those who can best manage the brutal deleveraging process in the advanced economies, those who can use the currently forgiving conditions to rebalance, and those not lured into fresh crisis by easy money.

The deadly flooding has swept down the Indus River corridor from the Himalayan foothills in the north to Arabian Sea in the south. Along the way the rush of rising floodwaters have swept away or inundated everything in its path, killing at least 1,600 people. The U.N. estimates some 300,000 homes have been destroyed, and many more have been badly damaged, rendered uninhabitable. Some 6 million people are in need of some kind of aid, and 14 million lives have been disturbed. And those are only preliminary estimates.

The Afghan Taliban logistics officer laughs about the news he’s been hearing on his radio this past week. The story is that a Web site known as WikiLeaks has obtained and posted thousands of classified field reports from U.S. troops in Afghanistan, and hundreds of those reports mention the Americans’ suspicions that Pakistan is secretly assisting the Taliban—a charge that Pakistan has repeatedly and vehemently denied. “At least we have something in common with America,” the logistics officer says. “The Pakistanis are playing a double game with us, too.”

Like many developing nations, the kingdom has seen its electricity demand soar in recent years—more than 8 percent annually—and is actively searching for alternatives to fossil fuels. Enter nuclear power: last month Saudi Arabia announced a joint initiative with Japan’s Toshiba and American firms the Shaw Group and Exelon to build and operate at least two nuclear power plants in the country. This comes on the heels of the establishment in April of the King Abdullah City for Nuclear and Renewable Energy, an organization to manage future energy sources.

While historical data shows that official figures can sometimes be close to the mark, the quarterly statistical ritual offers insight into how modern China is actually run and into a fundamental weakness of Chinese “market socialism.” During the Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618–907), there was one official for every 2,927 people. During the more recent Qin Dynasty (1644–1911), there was one official for every 299 people. But in modern China, there are up to 50 million officials, amounting to about one official for every 27 people. Its bureaucracy certainly cannot complain about being understaffed.

Yet, while modern China is the most overgoverned land in Asia, it is also one of the worst governed. Even as China has decentralized and officials have multiplied, the country is not building the institutions needed for better transparency and accountability. CCP’s influence over courts, bureaucracies, media, research institutions, and state-controlled enterprises are well known. It’s difficult to make CCP’s local officials accountable when Beijing relies on them to maintain the party’s hold on power in far-flung places.

Unsubstantiated rumors are also circulating that the North Korean players’ amuse themselves on the road with the game of rock-paper-scissors and that Kim Jong-il himself outfitted them with individual earpieces so he can broadcast live advice from Pyongyang into their ears as they trot around the pitch. Without defending the general diligence of the press, these rumors simply couldn’t be verified or disproved because every press conference involving the North Koreans has been preceded by a warning from a FIFA bureaucrat that “questions that intersect politics with football” are off-limits.

Mozambique’s historical connection to Portugal made for an intensely pro-Lisbon crowd at the Troyeville Hotel, and each one of the sexy Portuguese boys’ seven goals was met with exponentially louder howls of glee. But I have to admit that the more goals the Portuguese scored, the worse I felt. I didn’t dare to wear my fiery colors of labor too obviously inside the Troyeville, but I was rooting for North Korea. Partly because of the amusement factor—rock-paper-scissors!—but mainly because, when I looked at those hapless North Korean players giving up goal after goal, I wondered how safe their friends and families would be.

Surprising as it may seem, Phoenix has become America’s kidnapping capital. Last year 368 abductions were reported, compared with 117 in 2000. Police say the real number is likely much higher, since many go unreported. Though in the past most of the nabbings stemmed from domestic-violence incidents, now the majority are linked to drug-trafficking and human-smuggling operations that pervade the Arizona corridor. It’s still unclear to what extent the snatchings are being directly ordered by Mexican cartels, but authorities say they’re undoubtedly a byproduct of the drug-fueled mayhem south of the border. “The tactics are moving north,” says assistant police chief Andy Anderson. “We don’t have the violence they have in Mexico yet—the killing of police officers and the beheadings—but in terms of kidnappings and home invasions, it has come.”

That raises an unnerving prospect: that the turmoil in Mexico—where drug violence claimed more than 6,000 lives last year—is finally seeping across the border. According to a December report by the Justice Department’s National Drug Intelligence Center, Mexican drug-trafficking organizations have established a presence in 230 U.S. cities, including such remote places as Anchorage, Alaska, and Sheboygan, Wis. The issue is preoccupying American officials. “This is getting the highest level of attention,” including the president’s, says Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano…

Не так давно, сенсационной новостью явился взлом Twitter.com. Тогда, все это, “свалили” на русских “политических” хакеров.

Совсем недавно Twitter.com взломали еще раз. На этот раз, “русским духом” там и не пахло.

Хотя…

Фирма Sophos определила причину взлома аккаунтов известных личностей на Twitter, о которых сообщалось ранее. Тогда в результате хакерской атаки были взломаны микроблоги многих знаменитых пользователей. В блоге компании сказано, что скандала можно было избежать, если бы сотрудники Twitter придумали для административной панели более сложные пароли. По информации, которой располагает Sophos, хакеру-подростку под ником GMZ удалось получить доступ к административной панели управления микроблог-платформой Twitter. Подобрав при помощи словаря пароль одного из сотрудников Twitter (пароль был достаточно прост – “счастье”(happiness)), юноша “увел” пароли от аккаунтов многих известных в США личностей.

But assuming that people are as fascinated by the discovery of real-life Earths as they are by, say, Will Smith fighting off alien invaders, we might launch a telescope designed to scan auspicious planets for the presence of CO2 and ozone, then invent a more intricate device to suss out whether these atmospheres contain isotopes of oxygen consistent with living systems. The final step, says Borucki, is “a probe that can travel near the speed of light and gets there, shows us pictures, listens to their radio stations and television stations, and gives us a much better understanding of this new planet.”

We’re not at the Star Trek stage yet. But given enough time and interest—and enough money—scientists believe the possibilities are limitless. “I’ve suggested nothing that we don’t know pretty much how to do currently,” Borucki says. “After Kepler, I cannot imagine people saying, ‘I don’t care about life. I don’t care about these wonderful civilizations that might exist.’ ” So let the search continue—assuming, of course, that E.T. doesn’t show up at the White House first.
